Well, there's mastering and then there's mastering nowadays. It should only be leveling it, ideally, don't you think? So if we've done our work, I don't think the mastering engineer/service should be changing the tone of the record anymore. In the old days, there was a lot of adjusting for the limitations of the analog gear. Digital files are mostly lossless (at least to the average ear), so the mix is dictating the tonal profile. I would also assume that mastering engineers are mostly concerned with levels for handheld devices and streaming services. The change to cassette, then CD, I assume would've been a huge trip for the mastering engineers. I'm sure some of you remember when mastering was mostly concerned with cutting lacquers for vinyl.
